Knowing the issuing body matters: it tells us which layout to expect and which registry references must survive into English untouched.
| Issuing authority | Where | What it issues |
|---|---|---|
| Ufficio di Stato Civile (Comune) | Italy | Atti di nascita, matrimonio, morte — issued by the municipality where the event was registered |
| Tribunale / Corte d'Appello | Italy | Divorce judgments (sentenza di divorzio) and separation decrees |
| Prefettura / Procura della Repubblica | Italy | Where the Hague apostille is affixed — the apostille itself is part of the document and is translated too |
| Consolato Generale d'Italia | Abroad | AIRE registrations and certificates issued to Italians resident overseas |
Terms that must be transcribed rather than translated are marked — inventing an English equivalent for a registry code is a classic cause of RFEs.
| Italian | English | Handling |
|---|---|---|
| Atto di nascita | Birth record | Translated; register reference transcribed exactly |
| Estratto per riassunto | Summary extract of the register | Translated — differs from a copia integrale, so it is labeled |
| Copia integrale | Full literal copy of the register entry | Translated in full including marginal notes |
| Annotazione marginale | Marginal annotation | Always translated — usually carries marriage, divorce or name-change facts |
| Stato di famiglia | Family status certificate | Translated; household composition preserved as a table |
| Codice fiscale | Italian tax code | Transcribed exactly — an identifier, never translated |
| Casellario giudiziale | Criminal record certificate | Translated; the 'nulla' (no entries) wording rendered literally |
How certification works. Every order includes a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy on company letterhead that meets the USCIS requirement (8 CFR 103.2(b)(3)) for a complete English translation with a translator certification. Each certificate carries an order number you can verify at any time at certmytranslation.com/verify. USCIS does not require notarization for supporting documents — see our USCIS guide.
